The Golden Horn

The Golden Horn

I've always thought that the name Golden Horn referred to the shape of the land in this part of Istanbul. It actually refers to the waterway here.

This was the perfect place for the Byzantines to keep their navy. It is deep, protected from storms and has a defendable entrance. That entrance was defended with high walls and, more interestingly, a long chain stretched across the water.

It worked. Most of the time.

But, most of the time isn't really good enough when it comes to invasions, is it?

Well, it makes for a more fascinating history.

My other photographs of Istanbul can be found in the gallery.
