We've got a new scanner at work so I started scanning some of the ridiculous amount of slides that I have banked up over the past fifteen years or so. I had tried to scan this shot in on my crappy scanner at home previously and the results were terrible so it was the first I tried on this new one and I'm really impressed.
There is no noise whatsoever. It's also really fast (god, firewire rocks).
Once I scanned it I noticed that strange shadow-like thing which makes the background look like a backdrop. I think it's from the fact that it was a bit of a long exposure with a blast of flash at the end. I think the shadow is actually the wing just before the flash. Whatever it is, I like it. The scanner is able to scan at 16 bit so even though there is a lot of the shot that is excessively dark, the scanner was able to pull detail out of the darker parts.
Did I mention there is no noise?
As far as what the picture is of, it's one of the lanterns at the illuminares festival in Vancouver.
