The Old Man and the Church

The Old Man and the Church

In Manarola, the second town in the Cinque Terra that we went to, there is this magnificent old church that is surprisingly large for a village this small. It's the Church of San Lorenzo and it was built - or started - in 1338. This photo makes it look much more utilitarian than it really is as it shows no windows at all and only an imposing front facade.

The inside however is classic, old, italian and catholic.

The man sitting was not there when we entered the church but was when we came out. It was good for me because he adds a much needed human element to what would otherwise be an imposing wall of stone. His relaxed pose contrasts with the formality of the meticulously placed blocks.
