The Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte

The Abbey of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte

Apparently, the beach is a fairly recent addition to this tiny little bay - showing up in 1915 after a particularly large storm (Jeebus?!). Until then, people were able to moor their boats to the foundation of the abbey. And when I say people, I mean pirates. Real pirates, not stupid, internet–meme pirates.

1915 can be considered a recent addition because construction of the abbey started in the 10th century. I doubt that they hauled all of the construction materials over the hills, so everything must have been brought in by boat. Even that doesn't seem easy. As I said yesterday, if you check out the map feature - see link to the right and check the satellite option - you can get a sense of how tiny this little village is. Well, it's not really a village. It's an abbey with related buildings and some restaurants that, thankfully, blend in to the environment fairly well.
