The Path to Vernazza

The Path to Vernazza

I don't have much time to post - just stopped in to a friends place to catch up on email while waiting for our internet to get hooked up.

This is a shot of Vernazza taken from a path you can take that runs between all five of the tiny villages that make up the Cinque Terre. The tower on the left is part of Doria Castle. It was built in the 15th century to protect the village and area from pirates. Actual pirates who were probably living and hiding here. It's probably not accurate, but I imagine them attacking the harbour in ships like this.

Unfortunately for Vernazza, that pirate den is not so far away, maybe only forty kilometres by boat.

The bell tower on the right is from the 14th century church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia which sits right down on the water in the main piazza.

In the foreground is a smaller tower for a slightly higher view and as a warning post for any attacks from the land side.
