St. Stephen's Basilica

St. Stephen's Basilica

At the end of the 19th century, the Pest part of Budapest underwent a huge expansion. The model for that expansion was Paris.

This is St. Stephen's Basilica. It's tied, with the parliament, for the tallest building in Budapest and here it's easy to see how much it towers above the buildings around it. The true size is only truly felt when you stand in front of it though.

We went to a concert inside of it and it's absolutely incredible. It should be, it took 54 years to build. Of course, if the dome didn't collapse during the initial construction requiring a complete rebuild, I guess it would have taken considerably less time.

I'll put up photos of the front and inside in future posts.

If you look closely, you can see visitors on the balcony that runs around the outside of the dome tower.

Even though I was only there a few weeks ago, I could totally go back right now. It's a beautiful city with so much history and culture and there was a lot that we didn't get a chance to see. To check out everything would take at least a month. At least.
