Nearly all of the houses on Amrum, a small island in the North See where we went for a few days last year, look like this. Low, with thatched roofs that are actually made of straw or water reeds. It looks unbelievably layout intensive but It's neat to watch them shave all of the straw down so that they are perfect and smooth. I'm assuming that it works well because they've been making them this way for hundreds of years but I'm curious as to how they could possibly hold up against some of the crazy wind and rain that is common there.
My other photos (only two others as of this posting) from Amrum can be viewed in the gallery.
