Digital Orca

Digital Orca

You wouldn't believe how interested I was in seeing this Douglas Coupland sculpture, Digital Orca, when I got to Vancouver. In fact, I was intensely disappointed that it went up not long after I moved away in 2010.

It lived up to my expectations. How perfect it is, sitting at the edge of the harbour. A pixelated killer whale - so west coast and modern - arching skyward in that iconic breaching motion. Really amazing.

Oddly enough I met and talked to Mr. Coupland, but not here in Vancouver, where both he and I are from, but in Karlsruhe, Germany, when he did a reading from one of his books there. He is actually the only Canadian that I have met while in Germany. And not that he would know it but, if it wasn't for him doing that book reading, I wouldn't have the job I have now. It's a bit of a convoluted story but the end effect is that if there was no book reading, I wouldn't be working where I am now.

And, since I absolutely love where I'm working, I'm very thankful that Mr. Coupland came and did that reading. In my life it makes perfect sense that someone from my home town in Canada would help me find a job in Germany without even being aware of it.

My other photographs of art in public spaces can be found in the gallery.
